Internal conversion and energy transfer dynamics of spheroidene in solution and in the LH-1 and LH-2 light-harvesting complexes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Femtosecond time resolved fluorescence upconversion was applied to determine directly the lifetime of the 1B~ + state of the carotenoid spheroidene in vitro in various polar and nonpolar solvents and in the LH-1 and LH-2 light-harvesting complexes of Rhodobacter sphaeroides at room temperature. The spheroidene IB + ~ 2A~internal conversion time varies from 150 to 250 fs in the solvents studied and depends on the polarizability of the surrounding environment. The internal conversion time in the protein environment is estimated based on the solution measurements. There is a dramatic shortening for the spheroidene 1B + fluorescence lifetime seen inside LH-1 and LH-2 (60 fs and 80 fs, respectively) over this expected internal conversion time. 1. متن کاملThe crystal structure of the light-harvesting complex II (B800-850) from Rhodospirillum molischianum.
BACKGROUND The light-harvesting complexes II (LH-2s) are integral membrane proteins that form ring-like structures, oligomers of alpha beta-heterodimers, in the photosynthetic membranes of purple bacteria. They contain a large number of chromophores organized optimally for light absorption and rapid light energy migration. Recently, the structure of the nonameric LH-2 of Rhodopseudomonas acidop...
متن کاملDark States in the Light-Harvesting complex 2 Revealed by Two-dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy.
Energy transfer and trapping in the light harvesting antennae of purple photosynthetic bacteria is an ultrafast process, which occurs with a quantum efficiency close to unity. However the mechanisms behind this process have not yet been fully understood. Recently it was proposed that low-lying energy dark states, such as charge transfer states and polaron pairs, play an important role in the dy...
متن کاملPhotoprotection in a purple phototrophic bacterium mediated by oxygen-dependent alteration of carotenoid excited-state properties.
Carotenoids are known to offer protection against the potentially damaging combination of light and oxygen encountered by purple phototrophic bacteria, but the efficiency of such protection depends on the type of carotenoid. Rhodobacter sphaeroides synthesizes spheroidene as the main carotenoid under anaerobic conditions whereas, in the presence of oxygen, the enzyme spheroidene monooxygenase c...
متن کاملPigment Organization and Transfer of Electronic Excitation in the Photosynthetic Unit of Purple Bacteria
Absorption of light by light-harvesting complexes and transfer of electronic excitation to the photosynthetic reaction center (RC) constitute the primary light-harvesting process of photosynthesis. This process is investigated on the basis of an atomic level structure of the so-called photosynthetic unit of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides. The photosynthetic unit combines i...
